Wahhabism is the political foundation of radical Islam in South Asia. It originally took root in India in response to British ascendancy to power as a reformist theology revitalizing Islam in the 1740s. In the early 19th century, Syed Ahmed began jihads to purge Hinduism of polytheism. Clumsy British purges against the misnamed "Hindustani Fanatics" in the North-West Frontier resulted in tribal unification & support for the Wahhabis. Modern Sunni Islam in South Asia has shifted toward extreme conservatism & intolerance following political guidance from the Madrass trained politicians. Pakistan "Jamiat-i-Ulema-i-Islam" (Party of the Scholars of Islam) has widespread support. The over 7,000 madrasses in Pakistan educated & jihadized Taliban leaders, & the region now conceals Osama bin Laden. J. Harwell
